A Touch of Humor

Bob Copping told us the unfortunate tale of a Viking and the mayor of his town who left Leaf off his Census.

50/50 and Fines

Kerry Hagy selected Ross Woodhams as our big prize winner this week and Melinda Gruber the $2 prize winner.

Fines were charged to:

* Art Ayers grandson has a birthday on Thursday.

* Dave Campbell will be celebrating a birthday tomorrow.

* Richard Swanson’s granddaughter had a birthday Monday.

* Larry Wittkop had a little technical difficulty and we had to resort to a muted version of the birthday song which turned out to be one of our best renditions of that song.

Our speaker this morning was introduced by Tom Fleming and was Kerri Hagy, Executive Director of the South Haven Center for the Arts.

Kerri began by reviewing the Center’s mission; that they focus on visual arts but work in collaboration with other artistic presentations in South Haven.

Their current exhibition is one that we sponsored, The Student Art Exhibition, held this year outdoors.  A long running program at the Art Center, the display of student art had to come up with a unique way to display the student art this spring and chose an outdoor setting, displaying the art outside of each school building, including most of the South Haven Public Schools buildings, St. Basil’s School, Covert Schools and the Van Buren Tech Center.

Kerri also highlighted ways that the Center was able to offer assistance to art students this past year by providing art supplies for students to use during lock downs and to the YDC for their summer program so they could safely offer art activities during their programing.

Kerri went on to describe the Art on the Town sculpture project, including highlighting Lou Rodriguez’ sculpture outside Clementine’s and mentioning “Brilliance” near N & R and Foust, also downtown.  The program began by providing seed money for materials for the artists.  Once the pieces were put on display, they could be sold and donated to the city or returned to the artists after a year.  More sculptures are in the works.

The next part of the project includes the Mural Bike Rack Project which includes building small bike racks that include murals and also larger sculpted bike racks.

Kerri also noted that even when the building was closed, they kept their windows “open” by displaying “Mittens” artwork done by local artists and school children in those windows.  Noe they are prepared to reopen the gallery and have an exhibition set up and ready to go.  They will start with a soft opening this week and open to the public on June 2nd, with masks and social distancing.  It is a display of the work of local artists.

Kerri also showed us the schedule of planned exhibits for this year.  That list can be found on the Center’s website: www.southhavenart.org

Kerri also took a few minutes to go over improvements made to the building, which is owned by the city,  over the past five years.  Included on that list were the addition of an elevator, the complete renovation of the wood floors in the building, hot water in the restroom basins and the new outdoor patio, constructed through a donation from the Hodgman family and Lawn Boys.  They are currently working on getting the financing for a new roof for the building.

She also talked about the Freida exhibit that was scheduled for the Center but had to be canceled but how the anticipation of the exhibit led to many projects and events around town.

President Thompson thanked Kerri for her presentation and presented her with a gift certificate to a local eatery as our gift.

In the absence of giving the Four Way Test at our meeting, please say it now:
