SPOKES Rotary Club of South Haven
Our meeting started promptly at 7am. President Mary Sue Lyon
welcomed everyone, and we began with the “Pledge of Allegiance”,
followed by Art Ayers’ invocation.
Those attending via Zoom were Marty Graber, Dave Campbell, and
Steve Larsen.
Today’s guests were our guest speaker, Donna Rummel, and soon-
to-be members Bob Metzen and Todd Heinrich.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
+ Blessings in a Backpack volunteers are needed Wednesday,
January 18 th at 10:30am-North Shore School.
+ Mary Sue has received membership applications from Bob Metzen,
Anna Rydecki, and Todd Heinrich.
+ There will be a Board meeting immediately following today’s
meeting.
+ Thank you notes have been received from the SHPS Instrumental
Music Boosters for our support of their Orlando trip, and for
the musicians who performed at our holiday dinner.
+ 500 Club business cards have been printed, and Dana Hullinger
provided a summary of the content and purpose.
SONGS:
Larry Wittkop led us in our “songfest” this morning, beginning
with “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”, followed by what might best be
described as an unidentifiable selection, and concluded with “R-
O-T-A-R-Y”.
COPPING’s COMEDY RELIEF
Bob asked if anyone might be able to identify the rock group
which consists of four men who don’t sing...LaRae Odland was
quick to respond with “Mt. Rushmore”.
50/50 Raffle
Our guest speaker, Donna Rummel, was designated by Tom Ruesink,
as the “honest and reliable” attendee who would select today’s
winning ticket.
Stuart Comiskey had the winning ticket; however, he selected the
Queen, so no “pot” to be won today.
Paul Hix won the consolation prize.
Birthdays/Anniversaries
+ Paul Hix will celebrate his birthday on the 18 th .
+ Tom Renner has a birthday on Thursday, the 19 th (39 X 2)
+ Deb Davidson’s granddaughter, Sophia, celebrated her 9 th
birthday on Sunday.
+ Tom Rummel will celebrate his birthday on Friday, the 20 th .
Happy Bucks
+ Tom Ruesink, acting on behalf of all good “penalty
investigators”, wanted to be certain that Dan Thompson, Ross
Woodhams, Deb Davidson, and Ted Weber, would be taking care of
their fines for having had their photos in a recent “South Haven
Tribune”. Ted indicated that he had paid last week. It was also
mentioned that Don Hodgman’s photo was featured in this
morning’s “Herald-Palladium” riding a Zamboni.
+ GB Richmond announced that he has started a new business,
“Goodbye Money Stress”, a one-on-one consulting operation.
+ Larry Wittkop “not so happy” with MSU’s one point loss to
Purdue. He couldn’t resist saying that “MSU is still the better
team”.
+ Tom Renner announced that the South Haven City Council has
formally approved the Four Seasons Fireplace.
+ Deb Davidson’s grandson, Sean, was in a car accident;
thankfully, he was not seriously injured.
Program: Donna Rummel, Senior Manager of Innovations at Youth
Solutions, Inc., a key component of the Kinexus Group.
Donna was introduced by her husband, Tom, a “key component”, as
well:
At Youth Solutions, Inc., where Donna works with her team, she
works to create programming to improve student outcomes, by
preparing them for success in their college and career pathways.
Having spent years in educational leadership and advocacy, her
passion is to foster equity in education, by implementing
systems and programmatic change in our educational system.
Donna has also been an education advocate working in policy and
educational practice at the national, state, and local levels,
as well as serving as a Director of Curriculum and Assessment.
Having spent six years teaching high school English at
traditional public, vocational, and charter schools, as well as
two years as an Instructional Specialist, she has had the
opportunity to build programs and implement initiatives that
span from kindergarten to college.
Donna earned a BA in Secondary Education from Western Michigan
University, and a Master of Educational Leadership degree from
Siena Heights University.
Donna addressed a number of questions from those in attendance,
and her presentation was greatly appreciated by our club.
Mary Sue presented Donna with a Fleming Bros. Oil gift card, as
a token of our appreciation.
We concluded our meeting with the 4-Way Test.
