President Bill Roberts called the meeting to order promptly at 7:00 a.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. Art Ayers led us in prayer today asking for healing of Bob Copping and Mike Livovich, also for guidance and wisdom for both Marty Graber and the Houston Missions taking place.
Our guest this morning is our speaker Amanda Quinn- Firefighter/Paramedic with SHAES.
Announcements:
Blessings in a backpack schedule is now on the Rotary Website Calendar. This activity is held at the North Shore School beginning at 10:30 a.m., use the main entrance and masks are required.
Christmas party planning is in full swing.  The date posted on the Rotary calendar, has been scheduled for December 7, 2021.

The South Haven Speaker Series is sponsoring an event this Thursday, October 7, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. at Lake Michigan College, Kelly Root, Executive Director of Crain’s Detroit Business, will be speaking about Michigan’s current business climate and recovery.  The event will be held in the newly renovated community room.  Reach out to Jeremy or Mark for any additional information.  
Bob Copping has been moved from Mercy Hospital in Grand Rapids to a senior living community in Byron Center. We are not sure if his stay will be short term or long term. The family has given permission to share his information with club members.  Bob is allowed two visitors at a time and visitors are welcome.  Bob is currently staying at:  The Oaks of Byron Center, 2280 Byron View Drive SW, Byron Center, MI 49315, the main phone number is 1-844-353-4266.
We are recognizing one of our most valuable resources Tom Renner, who has been involved in many of our weekly activities and responsibilities, by reassigning some of the things he does. He will still be keeping our club very much in the public eye but will no longer be responsible for updating the website calendar, or posting the board meeting minutes, taking and posting pictures at the weekly meetings and posting and sending out the weekly Spokes. Mary Sue and Bill will take over his duties until other arrangements are made.  A big Thank You goes out to Tom for your years of commitment and service to the Rotary Club of South Haven.
Steve Miles our technical resource has not been presence has been sorely missed at our meetings.  He has been involved with taking care of family issues, his job, family, home his mother’s health and home and his sister’s health and home in Indiana and her farm in Allegan.
Humor
Bill Roberts made us chuckle this week with his story of the Engineer who was wrongfully sent to Hell  vs. the Lawyer in Heaven.
50/50 and Fines
Sandra Reno’s winning streak is officially over, with the announcement of Steve Larsen holding the winning ticket.  Steve then went on to win the pot when he picked the #4 card.  Steve generously re-donated his winnings. Thank you for your generosity Steve.  Ross Woodhams was the winner of the $2.00 this week.
As the new Editarian, please be patient with me, while I learn your names and the proper spelling.  This is my maiden voyage writing spokes, so any comments or concerns are greatly appreciated.

Sandra Reno’s husband Mark Celebrates his birthday, today, October 5th.
Larry Wittkop- Twin Grandsons, Ben and Jake celebrate their 17th birthday, and his granddaughter graduated from Western University.
The membership, to the best of their vocal ability, sang Happy Birthday today!
Tom Reusink updated the club regarding his Model A that was lost has now been found and returned to its rightful place.
Steve Larson’s son is in Basic Training.
Tom Fleming announced the Big 10 Tuesday promotion at the Shell Gas Stations.
Larry Wittkop was happy that 3 out of his 4 teams won last weekend.
Dene Hadden was happy to attend the Western University Graduation.
Rosalie was happy to be able to go to Canada to lay her mother’s cremated remains to rest and spend time with family.
Pete Swanson was happy about the DAR presentation in Holland taking place on Tuesday at 6:30.

Our speaker Amanda Quinn graduated from Grand Valley State University as an RN in 2013.  She then became a firefighter/paramedic in 2019 and got involved with SHAES.
October 3-9 is Fire Prevention Week.  Learn the Sound of Fire Safety handout was provided for the membership, regarding smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms.
Smoke Alarms
  • A continuous set of 3 loud beeps means smoke is detected and to get out!
  • A single chirp means the battery is low.
  • Chirping after a battery is changed means the unit needs to be replaced.
  • Test your smoke alarm once a month by holding the button down.
  • Replace your smoke alarm after 10 years.
CO Detectors
  • A continuous set of 4 loud beeps means CO is present in your home, get out!
  • A single Chirp means the battery is low.
  • CO alarms has different end of the unit life sounds that vary by manufacturer.
  • Chirping after the battery has been changed means the unit needs to be replaced.
Leading Causes of Fire
  • Smoking
  • Heating
  • Cooking
 
Amanda advised us on the best way to survive a fire. Most fires take place in the Kitchen, Bedroom, and Living Room.  We have 43 million people living with disabilities, so it is especially important for these people to have proper planning in case of a fire.  A few tips on survival;
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Develop an escape plan.
  • Practice your escape plan.
  • Get out First!
Fire Safety Fun Fair is being held Thursday, October 7, 2021,  at the Fire Station from 5-8 p.m. There will be demonstrations, a bucket brigade, escape drills and hot dogs for all. Amanda will be conducting school visits for the next 3 weeks, handing out goody bags and giving fire safety demonstrations.
President Roberts thanked Amanda for her life saving presentation today and presented her with our speakers’ gift a Shell Gas Card.
Bill adjourned the meeting with the Four Way Test promptly at 8:00 a.m.
