SPOKES VOL. LXX NO.45
July 19, 2022

President Mary Sue Lyon welcomed everyone promptly at 7am. We
opened with “The Pledge of Allegiance”, followed by Art Ayers’
invocation, which included a litany of prayer concerns: for
family and friends of those who lost their lives in the lake
last Thursday evening, for Scott Mark and family, as they grieve
Sue’s death, for Mike and Mary Ann Livovich and their family, as
they navigate the last stages of Mike’s life, for Marty Graber,
who recently had cervical spine surgery and is recovering slowly
at home, as well as for Richard Swanson, who is scheduled for
cervical spine surgery on Wednesday the 20 th . Prayers of
Thanksgiving were also spoken on behalf of SHAES and the other
search and rescue teams, who worked skillfully and tirelessly
assisting with the search on the lake.

GUESTS: Today’s speaker, Hannah Bentley, from the Make-a-Wish
Foundation

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
+ We received a thank you note from the We Care Community
Resource Center, thanking our club for sponsorship of their golf
outing, which helped them raise $16,000+ to support their
services.
+ There will be a Board meeting immediately following the club
meeting, with member applications for Mike Kempker and Holly
Boyd to be discussed.
+ Our August 14 th Fly-in Pancake Breakfast is an “all hands-on
deck” event, so please get it on your calendars. Don will have
sign-up sheets available at next week’s meeting.
+ The Rotary District Foundation raffle tickets have been
received. The money generated provides support for the grants
awarded by the District Foundation each year.
We have been allotted 43 tickets to sell at $25 each. Our club
has been very successful in securing Karl Sandelin Grants from
the District Foundation, which has exceeded our investment in
raffle tickets over the years. The $2500 we received this year
to support our grant to the Mitten Children’s Museum was such a
grant. See Dave Campbell to purchase tickets over the next few
weeks.
+ Angelica has made available several copies of the 2022-23
schedule for greeters and program chairs. Feel free to take one
before you leave.
+ The South Haven Theatre Series invites you to attend the July
23 rd performance of “Becoming Queen Elizabeth II” at Listiak
Auditorium. Tickets are $15 each and are available online at
www.southhaventheatreseries.org or at the door.
The production begins at 7:30pm.
50/50
+ Tom Ruesink was again in search of someone “honest and
reliable” and located ONE-President Lyon.
+ Ted Weber was back to his winning ways and had the winning
ticket. He then drew the King, which didn’t “translate” to major
winnings for Kailey Eddy, but she did receive the $2 prize.
+ Tom then acknowledged those joining us via Zoom: Hannah
Bentley, Bob Boerma, Melinda Gruber, Steve Larsen, and Scott
Mark.

BIRTHDAYS and ANNIVERSARIES
+ Tom Renner reported that Carole celebrated her birthday on
Monday. They also celebrated an anniversary on Sunday.
+ Tom Fleming “thinks” that he and Dorann have an anniversary
this week.
+ We were then led in what turned out to be a woeful rendition
of our “Ludington-style” birthday/anniversary song.
+ Larry Wittkop announced that there are 45 days until the
college football season begins and adding “Go Green”.
+ Dan Thompson has 6 grandchildren staying in his home, ages 1,
3, 7, 10, 14, and 16. An active household, for sure!!!
+ John Mellein announced that his 4 grandchildren are back in
the area this week.
+ Mark Odland mentioned what a pleasure it was to attend a “1915
and Earlier” car show at Red McFadden’s barn. He indicated that
his favorite was the Stanley Steamer and, if I have it “right”,
it could travel 20 miles per 20 gallons of water!
