Today’s meeting started promptly at 7 a.m. with the pledge of allegiance.
Pastor Jeff Dick lead today’s invocation thankful to be able to serve in the community.
 
We are having our program first today so the kids can make it to class on time.
 
Bob Boerma is the sponsor of today’s program the History Club at the South Haven High School.
 
Julie Sheppard is the founder of the History Club
  • Julie has been a teacher for SH School District since 1988.
  • She also coaches middle school volleyball and is a veteran 4H leaser
Julie’s most recent awards include:
  • 2021 Michigan State History Educator of the year
  • 2020 Intermediate School District Educational Hero Award Recipient
  • 2019 Education and Service Award, Rotary Club of South Haven
Julie was with us through Zoom for her presentation.
 
Julie has been involved with the history club for 16 years.
 
  • History Club has a competition on April 30.
  • The club is made up of grades 5-12
  • They have 35 members
  • Theodore Roosevelt and the Panama Canal was the most recent competition board.

The Club Hero Award was given to Sandra Reno! Hey that’s Me!!  Thank you so much everyone! Its an honor to be chosen.  An awards dinner will be held on May 21 in Lansing.
Educational Fundraiser – Dene Hadden and Deb Davidson April 30th
Deb Davidson announced that the deadline for the Educational Fundraiser has been extended to Friday April 22. There will be a silent auction by Scott Mark.  Food will be from Taste. Checks will be made out to SH Rotaries.
 
Dene told us that the High School has 43 Applications this year for 150 Different scholarships.  There are 9 applications for the Rotary Scholarships.  We currently have $4000 to offer for scholarships. Lake Michigan College has $170,000 to offer for scholarships.
Mark Odland reminded the membership that the Education Fundraiser is the Vehicle to raise funds for Lake Michigan college, and that part of Rotary is to help students become better citizens so lets get more people to the dinner!
 
 Potential Paul Harris Awards.
 
Car Show sponsored by the Rotary Club in May of this year. Tom Ruesink presented to the board at the last meeting the idea of having an informal car show sometime in May of this year. The function would replace a similar event that McFadden’s will no longer be putting on. It will be held in the Senior Center parking lot. Date of the event and volunteer opportunities will be announced later.
 
At the last Board meeting we approved a grant request in the amount of $500.00 for maintaining the Buoy in Lake Michigan. The funds are being collected by the South Haven Steelheaders.
The board also approved a grant request for $1000.00 for the Robotics STEM project.
The board also approved a grant request for $10000.00 to create the Great Lakes Exhibit that will be part of the Mitten Children’s Museum. The proposed funding for the project will be $5000.00 of club money; $2500.00 from a Karl Sandelin matching grant, and $2500.00 from a District 6360 matching grant.
The board voted and the educator of the year is Michael Dubbink. A formal presentation will be held at the Educational Fundraiser.
Nominations for the citizen of the year and Rotarian of the year are still being accepted.

Kenya project Update – Years of visioning, planning, fundraising and designing will soon be rewarded with the completion of a 160,000 gallon water storage cistern for the Maternal and Child Hospital in Ngoswani, Kenya. The cistern has been capped. The concrete needs to cure. In a matter of days the cistern will be operational, providing a safe water resource to the hospital which serves approximately 300,000 people.
 
Blessings in a backpack Thursday  April 21st
 
Arbor Day Tree Planting – The planting of the tree will be Friday, April 29 (Arbor Day). It will be at Kids corner at 10:00 am It will be brief. Rotarians should bring shovels. We'll be joined by students from Maple Grove School and perhaps some Cub Scouts.
 
The Rotary transition dinner will be Thursday June 30 at Hawks Head restaurant and golf course. The golf course might be used before the dinner. See Dan Thompson to help set up the golf event.
 
We have been asked to participate in the July 4th parade Rotary’s part would involve manning the streets around the parade route, while Kiwanis would be helping at the staging area. Becky Burkerk will set up a meeting in April. We’ll need a lead person for that event.
 
We’re planning on Pancake breakfasts for Sunday July 3rd and Sunday August 14th 2022. There will be special volunteer opportunities to inventory and clean our pancake breakfast equipment before the July event.
 
Steve Larson – Chamber of Commerce ABO is Thursday 5-7 at Hidden Ponds RV Resort Register with the Chamber ahead of time. Show up and have a good time. Rotary members will get a tour at 6 pm.
